Degrees of Affection

I read this book last year, I believe, and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was my first true introduction to Steampunk, and I was hooked. I love history and...depending on how their done, I like alternate histories. But there is something about Steampunk that speaks to me. Whether it's the clothes or the interesting ways events are changed (The Puritans left for America because Britain and its church were friendly with supernaturals. Thus supernaturals are killed over there and it was made worse when they sided with the Confederacy during the Civil War.)

She nails each of the characters perfectly - being far braver with Lord Akeldama's flamboyant personality then even my mental voice was willing to attempt. She also gives the book itself the sarcastic and dry humor tone the writing resonates with. Her accents are quite good, particularly Lord Macon's Scottish burr and the scientist from America. I never grew tired of listening to the book and would have listened to it in one go if I could have. As it was, I actually stayed awake in the car when I was listening to this (a truly momentous occasion!). I have the next two books in hard copy...but I'm kinda wanting to get them in audio now!
